FAQ (6)
How do I convert between metric and imperial units?

Select the category (Length, Weight, etc.), enter a value, choose your source unit from the left dropdown and your target unit from the right dropdown. The conversion happens instantly. You can also see all conversions at once in the table below.

How accurate are the conversions?

Conversions use standard conversion factors with up to 10 significant digits of precision. For example, 1 mile = exactly 1609.344 meters, 1 pound = exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. These match the internationally agreed definitions.

Does the temperature conversion handle negative values?

Yes. The converter correctly handles negative temperatures for Celsius and Fahrenheit. Kelvin cannot be negative (absolute zero is 0 K = -273.15°C), but you can convert to and from any value in any supported scale.

What is the difference between KB and KiB?

This tool uses binary prefixes (1 KB = 1024 bytes), which is the convention in operating systems and file managers. The IEC standard defines KiB for binary (1024) and KB for decimal (1000), but in practice most software uses KB to mean 1024 bytes.

Can I convert between units in different categories?

No. You can only convert between units within the same category. For example, you cannot convert kilograms to kilometers because they measure different physical quantities (mass vs. distance).

Why does the 'All conversions' table show so many decimal places?

The tool shows up to 10 significant digits to ensure precision for scientific and engineering use. Trailing zeros are removed for cleaner display. Very large or very small numbers switch to scientific notation (e.g., 1.234e+9).

Unit Converter: Instant Metric & Imperial Conversions

The Unit Converter handles the most common measurement conversions developers, engineers, and everyday users encounter. Convert between metric and imperial units for length, weight, temperature, volume, speed, and data storage — all calculated instantly in your browser with no rounding surprises.

Length Conversions

Convert between kilometers, meters, centimeters, millimeters, miles, yards, feet, and inches. Common conversions: 1 mile = 1.609 km, 1 foot = 30.48 cm, 1 inch = 2.54 cm. These are used in construction, athletics, mapping, travel distances, and screen measurements (pixels per inch).

Weight and Mass Conversions

Convert between kilograms, grams, milligrams, pounds, ounces, tonnes, and stones. Key relationships: 1 kg = 2.205 lbs, 1 lb = 16 oz, 1 stone = 14 lbs. Weight conversions are essential in cooking, shipping, fitness tracking, and scientific measurements.

Temperature Conversions

Convert between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. Unlike other unit types, temperature conversion uses offset formulas rather than simple multiplication: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, and K = °C + 273.15. The tool handles these correctly, including negative values and the crossover point where -40°C = -40°F.

Volume Conversions

Convert between liters, milliliters, US gallons, quarts, cups, fluid ounces, and cubic meters. Note that US and Imperial gallons differ (1 US gal = 3.785 L vs 1 Imperial gal = 4.546 L). This tool uses US measurements, which is the more common international reference.

Data Storage Conversions

Convert between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, bits, kilobits, and megabits. Uses binary prefixes (1 KB = 1024 bytes) which matches how operating systems report file sizes. Bit conversions are useful for network bandwidth calculations where speeds are measured in Mbps (megabits per second) but files are measured in MB (megabytes).

Speed Conversions

Convert between meters per second, kilometers per hour, miles per hour, knots, and feet per second. Essential for automotive (mph/km/h), aviation (knots), physics (m/s), and weather reporting. Key relationship: 1 km/h = 0.621 mph.
